The Wireless Access Providers’ Association (WAPA) marked its 20th anniversary with a regional event in Gauteng on 19 March 2026, bringing together wireless operators, technology leaders, and industry stakeholders for a day of insight, networking, and forward-looking discussion at Irene Country Lodge.
The Wireless Access Providers’ Association (WAPA) is South Africa’s representative body for wireless internet service providers (WISPs), advocating for spectrum access, regulatory reform, and broadband connectivity in underserved areas since 2006.
Two Decades of Wireless Innovation
Under the theme “WAPA 20: Redefining the Wireless Landscape — Without Limits Since 2006,” the milestone event reflected on two decades of collaboration, innovation, and progress in building a more connected South Africa. Since its founding, WAPA has played a central role in advocating for wireless internet service providers (WISPs) and shaping the regulatory environment that enables wireless broadband delivery — particularly in areas where fibre and fixed-line infrastructure remains limited.
For telecoms resellers operating in the wireless connectivity space, WAPA’s 20-year track record represents the maturity and credibility of an industry segment that continues to grow. WISPs remain a vital part of South Africa’s broadband ecosystem, serving communities, businesses, and rural areas that fixed-line providers have not yet reached.
Spectrum Switch and Dynamic Spectrum Access
Spectrum Switch sponsored the Gauteng event and was commended by WAPA CEO Lesley Colmer for its active participation in ICASA’s Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) trials. These trials are opening new pathways for WISPs to grow their networks, use spectrum more efficiently, and deliver dependable broadband to more South Africans.
ICASA has published its intention to enable Dynamic Spectrum Access in two critical bands: the lower 6 GHz range (5.925–6.425 GHz) and the 3.8–4.2 GHz band. The successful deployment of 5G networks using dynamically allocated spectrum in both Ntuzuma (KwaZulu-Natal) and iXopo has demonstrated a reliable, cost-effective pathway to bringing high-speed internet to underserved and rural communities across South Africa.
Dynamic Spectrum Access is a particularly important development for the reseller community. As spectrum becomes more accessible and efficiently allocated, WISPs gain the capacity to offer faster, more reliable connections — which in turn improves the quality of VoIP, unified communications, and cloud services that resellers deliver over those networks. Better last-mile connectivity benefits the entire telecoms value chain.

WAPA’s anniversary is more than a celebration. It highlights the ongoing evolution of wireless broadband in South Africa and the opportunities that come with it. Resellers who partner with WISPs or serve customers in areas dependent on wireless connectivity should pay attention to developments like DSA and WAPA’s advocacy work with ICASA.
