Q-KON: True Reliable “off-grid” Merchant Connectivity for The Tourism Industry

Introduction

The NWR Torra Bay campsite is situated in the Skeleton Coast National Park on Namibia’s cold and icy Atlantic coast. It is approximately 270kms north of the town Henties Bay. This part of the coastline is notorious for its treacherous sand banks and a number of shipwrecks are testimony to this tragic past, hence the name Skeleton Coast. Torra Bay offers only the most basic amenities such as water, fire wood, a shop & a petrol station.

The Challenge

The paradox for today’s tourism and hospitality is to service customers in the most remote and isolated areas while still providing basic supplies supported with reliable card facilities.

Cash payment creates risks for all and NWR had to find a reliable communication link for card payments, reservation and basic customer broadband services. This communication required is for Torra Bay, Mile-108, Mile-72 and Jakkelsputz as well as various other NWR destinations. An additional complication is that these are temporary destinations which doesn’t operate full time throughout the year.

The Solution

Since 2019 FNB Namibia and Q-KON Africa partnered to provide reliable satellite communication to NWR resorts for the period December to February for each year. This year was no exception and Q- KON installed the Twoobii solutions.

Twoobii satellite service provides 99,5% uptime to ensure connectivity for FNB point-of-sale devices, a public WiFi hotspot service as well as 2 fixed telephone services with low-cost calling rates.
The partnership between FNB and Q-KON has assured that the NWR is ready to receive and serve guests at Torra Bay, Mile-108, Mile-72, Jakkelsputs and others.
