New Satin codec coming to Microsoft Teams

Somewhat buried in a Microsoft Teams update blog, Microsoft announced their new in-house developed codec coming to Microsoft Teams in the coming months.

A codec (the word is a  combination of coder and decoder) encodes and compresses data before it is sent and decodes received data. Microsoft says Satin, their new codec, will be able to deliver crystal clear wideband audio with as little as 7 kbps.

No details yet on which endpoints will get support for this codec, you would hope it would be in all Teams endpoints. It will be particularly useful for mobile devices.

This hasn’t hit Teams yet, we can see from Call Analytics Teams is still using SILKWide.

SILK is an audio codec developed by Skype.

I will post more on Satin as we get the details.
